I was born and raised in Santa Rosa, California. Since that time, I have lived in Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Utah, Maryland, and San Diego. I speak (well, spoke) Russian.

I graduated as political science valedictorian from Brigham Young University in 2004 and earned and my MA (2006) and PhD (2008) at the University of California, San Diego. My research deals broadly with the roles that governors and legislatures play in producing policy in the American states.

I began working at Brigham Young University in 2008 on a visiting contract. I have worked here as tenure-track faculty since 2009. My CV is available here .

My wife, Janelle, is a stay-at-home mom and part-time harpist. We have three boys, born in 2006, 2009, and 2012. My boys' awesomeness defies description. (So does Janelle's.)
