I was born and raised in Santa Rosa, California. Since that time, I have lived in Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Utah, Maryland, and San Diego. I speak Russian.
I graduated as political science valedictorian from Brigham Young University in 2004 and earned and my MA (2006) and PhD (2008) at the University of California, San Diego, under the direction of Gary Jacobson, Thad Kousser, and Sam Kernell. My dissertation dealt with the roles that challengers and campaign donors play in U.S. gubernatorial elections. Learn more on my research page.

My wife, Janelle, is a stay-at-home mom and part-time professional harpist. We have three boys, born in 2006, 2009, and 2012. My boys' awesomeness defies description. (So does Janelle's.)
