I was born and raised in Santa Rosa, California
. Since finishing high school there, I have lived in Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Utah, Maryland, and San Diego. Along the way, I learned Russian and some German. I've also picked up random tidbits of Spanish and Arabic, but I don't claim to speak them.
I received my undergraduate degree at Brigham Young University
and my PhD at the University of California, San Diego
. My dissertation dealt with the roles that challengers and campaign donors play in U.S. gubernatorial elections. My current research projects have expanded into more general concerns with state politics, public opinion, campaigns and voting, and other topics in American politics. You can find more detail about my current research on the research page.
I began working at Brigham Young University in 2008. My CV is available here
.
My wife, Janelle, is a stay-at-home mom and part-time professional harpist. Our first son was born in late 2006; our second boy came in mid-2009. My boys' awesomeness defies description. (So does Janelle's.)
The bulk of this site was hand-coded in PHP, valid XHTML/CSS, JavaScript, and MySQL. Portions of the site rely on Wordpress MU
, though I have been moving away from that. Some of the other websites I have designed are here
and here

Those little photos at the top of the site are random. Each time you load a page, a new set of photos appears. Just thought I'd clear that up, since some folks get confused.
