How old are state legislators?

As of February 2011, the youngest state legislator is 23 years old; the oldest is almost 90. Not surprisingly, though, most legislators are in their 50s and 60s. Only two chambers have an average age below 50, but barely: Florida's lower chmaber (49.6 years) and Ohio's upper (49.7 years).

The table below displays several bits of information about each chamber. You can sort the table by clicking on one of the column headings.

  • Size: How many people serve in this chamber?
  • N: How many members do we have age information for?
  • Min: How old is the youngest lawmaker in this chamber?
  • Average: What is this chamber's average age?
  • Max: How old is the oldest legislator in this chamber?
  • StD: What is this chamber's standard deviation?
  • Graph: Each graph ranges from 0 to 100 years old. The yellow mark indicates the chamber's average age; the blue bar indicates the range of ages, from youngest to oldest.
