The newest version of the my RSS widget for WordPress integrates several suggestions made by commenters on this post. Among the changes:

• A checkbox to reverse the order of the feed’s contents
• An option to hide that annoying “the feed is down” error message when the feed is empty
• Options to bypass the script stripping, so you can allow javascript in feeds you trust.

I uploaded a new, rewritten version of the KB Advanced RSS widget to the wordpress plugins repository today. Features:

• New options for trimming and formatting elements
• Better handling of the pubdate field
• Easier to customize with your own code

Check out the updated instructions and FAQ over at WP.org (follow the download link). Although the old syntax will still work, I’ve made a few changes.

For some time I’ve had people asking me why they get that “an error has occurred” message so frequently with KB Advanced RSS. I have figured out that it is definitely not an issue with my widget, since people get the same error when I tell them to try the default RSS widget. But while browsing the WordPress support forums recently, I came across a thread that may explain why so many people get this error: Their hosts are restricting the site from requesting the feed.

I realize that the title of this post says “v1.7,” but feel free to comment about later versions too. I update the thing too frequently to start a new post every time I make a change. (Don’t worry, most changes are minor and you don’t usually need to upgrade unless you want to.)
